Help WWF protect turtles.

Help WWF protect turtles in Australia's waters. Six out of the seven species of marine turtle living in Australia's waters are either critically endangered or endangered.

The main threats to marine turtles are:

  • Unsustainable coastal development that impacts on turtle habitat
  • Conflict with human activity including incidental capture in fishing gear and boat strike
  • Ingestion of, and entanglement in, marine debris
  • Feral predation
  • Illegal or unsustainable hunting
  • Increases in global temperatures, which disrupt the turtles' temperature-dependent sex determination and could lead to population instability

Your adoption of Hector the turtle will help WWF to protect marine turtles around Australia.

About Hector the Green Turtle

Hector is a green turtle from Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Hector's home is a world of indescribable colour. He glides through the most brilliant, sapphire-blue waters on earth, alive with fish of every fantastic shape and size.

In some parts of the Reef, turtles like Hector are being affected by the fibropapilloma (FP) virus, which may cause blindness, immobility, the obstruction of internal organs and death among young green turtles. The virus may be occurring because of pollutants from industry or pesticides washing into the Reef.

All of our turtle adopters "adopt" Hector so that we can share his ongoing story with you. We hope that by following Hector's progress on the Great Barrier Reef you can experience the challenges and successes involved in conserving this beautiful creature.
